This would be great for a kids' program or school. It is a classic in the field of geography, and in understanding the relationship between humans and the land. Today' book is "Man in Nature, America Before the Days of the White Man: A First Book in Geography" by Carl Sauer. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1939.

This book was written just before the beginning of World War II, and was intended as a junior high geography textbook, teaching about the importance of people in relation to geography. All of the chapters are tied to the maps he provides at the back of the book, and he consistently emphasizes how cultures are influenced by the land, and asks questions to tie the reader back to their own home and geography. Keeping in mind that his assumptions are based on what he thinks we were like 500 years earlier--before Christopher Columbus "discovered" what he thought was India--the strength of the book is that he recognized that our nations are very different from each other, and influenced by our relationship with the earth and water and plant and animal relatives where we live.
The illustrator, Antonion Sotomayor, was a Bolivian painter, mural painter, illustrator, sculptor and caricaturist who lived and exhibited in San Francisco until his death in 1985.
The maps include land and water, yearly rainfall, vegetation and climate, along with "The Indian Peoples and the Regions in Which They Lived" Map.
