Inside Passage

 "Inside Passage: Living with Kiler Whales, Bald Eagles and Kwakiutl Indians" by Michael Modzelewski.  As a young man, Modzelewski decided to fulfill a dream--to live on an isolated island, reliant on his own two hands--similar to Jack London or Thoreau. Or as he said to his father, "Sometimes you have to lower your standard of living to reach a higher level." He found his place as a visitor on the Inside Passage of the Salish Sea. This is primarily a journal of his 18 months there, mostly alone, while tourists, eagles, whales and his Kwakiutl neighbors (elders and young AIM members doing what they could to protect their heritage) came and went, sometimes stopping to check up on the tenderfoot visitor to their land.
